Divine Mercy Novena 2012

Divine Mercy Novena 2012

Starting on Good Friday, I am joining more than 10,000 Catholics to pray a Divine Mercy Novena!

I’m actually trying to help this online prayer community (PrayMoreNovenas.com) to get 20,000 people praying this novena for God’s Mercy. We all need Mercy, right?

You can sign up for handy email reminders to get the the novena prayers here: http://www.praymorenovenas.com/divine-mercy-novena

After you sign up, maybe you can help spread the word as well. God’s Mercy is abundant and overflowing, let’s share it!

Osama Bin Laden

Much of our country is cheering over the death of Osama Bin Laden. My children are puzzled by this. They agree that Bin Laden certainly was not a nice person, but he was a person. As Catholics, don’t we believe in the sanctity of ALL human life? Do we believe that all mankind is made in the image and likeness of God?
Did Bin Laden need to be removed from the seat of power he held? Yes, I believe he did, however, does killing him now make him a martyr of the jihad? Does this possibly make him even more powerful?
While people are cheering in the streets, I hope they are mindful that we must continue to be vigilant against terrorism. Taking out one terrorist from a group that would see all people who disagree with them subjugated or murdered only opens up the possibility of an even more heinous person stepping into his place.
I am reminded of the hydra from mythology. When one head was cut off the hydra, two more grew in its place. Has removing Bin Laden from power given an opening for two more to rise in his place? Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, I intend to nurture my children and continue to teach them that all human life is precious and that God is merciful. If both of these are true, then we must pray for the souls of tyrants just as we pray for the souls of the just. I do think that it was no coincidence that Bin Laden was killed on Divine Mercy Sunday. We do not what state his heart was in at the time of his death. As Jesus said in Matthew 5:44: “But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:”

Dear Lord,
Thank You for reminding me of Your mercy through the voices of my children. It can be easy to fall into hatred of those who persecute us. It can be easy to despise those who are different than we are. These prejudices really have no place in our lives if we are truly Christians. You have not demanded that we like those who persecute us, only that we see them as Your children, made in Your image and likeness, just as we are made in Your image and likeness.
Amen.
